Advocating for Safety and Access

The conversation around GLP-1 medications has grown louder in recent years, with these treatments showing great promise for managing obesity. However, challenges like supply shortages and affordability have created barriers for many individuals. In response, patients are turning to compounded GLP-1 medications as an alternative.

Leading Conversations on GLP-1 Compounding

At the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), we recognize the growing interest in GLP-1 compounding and understand the need for clarity and guidance. That’s why we’ve been actively engaging with key stakeholders like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, among many others, to understand the full landscape.

Through these efforts, we aim to:

  • Advocate for policies that ensure compounded medications meet strict safety and efficacy standards.
  • Address concerns about the accessibility and affordability of FDA-approved obesity treatments.
  • Encourage pharmaceutical companies to increase production, lower costs and develop new treatments to meet demand.

At the core of our work is a commitment to protecting patients, ensuring access to safe, effective options and improving care for everyone impacted by obesity.

While we continue to evaluate GLP-1 compounding, we urge a strong “buyer beware” around compounded GLP-1 products. You can check out our joint statement here which urges people to not use compounded GLP-1 products at this time as we are unable to fully evaluate their safety and efficacy.

Looking Ahead

The OAC will continue to stay at the forefront of discussions about GLP-1 medications and compounded alternatives. Our work is far from done, but we’re making strides to ensure that your voice is heard in every conversation.

As we continue to advocate for safe, affordable and effective obesity treatments, we will also provide updates and resources to help you navigate your care options. Thank you for trusting the OAC in your health journey — we’re here to support you every step of the way!
